Jane Spiro

Oxford Brookes University
Professor of Education and TESOL
Oxford, United Kingdom

I am currently Professor of Education and TESOL at Oxford Brookes University in the UK, and began my career as a teacher of English as an Additional Language in an inner city London primary school, then in a further education college in the UK, before running British Council development workshops for language teachers worldwide including in India, Poland, Hungary, Japan, Egypt. My interest has always been to develop the confidence of both teachers and learners to be creative with language. I have had two books on creative teaching published by Oxford University Press Creative PoetryWriting and Storybuilding; and also collections of poetry, stories and a novel  'alongside' the pedagogy of creative teaching (is a gateway and Playing for Time published by Oversteps). One of my presiding themes, both pedagogically, academically and creatively, is the experience of crossing cultural and linguistic borders.  I published a sequence of stories and poems based on refugee stories Testimony of Flight (Palewell Press 2019),  a collection of case studies of innovative school practice that supports children's diversity (Linguistic and Cultural Innovation in Schools with Eowyn Crisfield, Palgrave Macmillan 2018). and currently am drawing together stories of cultural transitions in learning for a new book with Routledge  Crossing Study Borders.
